Oak Furniture Land relies on wood for its businesses, and we recognise the positive influence we can have in protecting global forests through implementing responsible timber sourcing practices. Therefore, Oak Furniture Land is fully committed to the protection of global forests and respects the people and communities who depend on them.
We commit to continually improving our timber sourcing practices, while also publicly and accurately reporting on our progress against the requirements of this Policy.
This Policy applies to all our real hardwood furniture sold by Oak Furniture Land.
Our Approach & Ambition
Our Approach and Ambition are based around our three standards for timber sourcing:
Our minimum requirement is that all our manufacturers supply timber that is from traceable, legal and non-controversial sources (Bronze) – and our plan is to continually increase the amount of responsibly-sourced (Silver) and sustainably-sourced (Gold) timber.
Our ambition is by 2022 to have 100% of the timber that we use in our furniture sustainably sourced (Gold). However we recognise that this is a journey and, because of the lack of availability of sustainably-sourced timber, by 2022 some timber may still be responsibly-sourced (Silver).
|Traceable, Legal & Non-Controversial||Responsibly Sourced||Sustainably Sourced|
Timber that is from known sources and that is sourced in line with the requirements of the European Union Timber Regulations which prohibit illegally sourced timber entering the EU market. In addition we require suppliers to declare that timber supplied to us is non-controversial; i.e.:
Timber sourced from forests located in low risk countries (as defined by the CPI*) with supporting chain-of-custody documentation
Timber that is PEFC certified with full chain-of-custody excluding PEFC-certified timber from Chinese forests
Timber that is FSC certified with full chain-of-custody
* Defined as countries scoring in the upper quartile of the Corruption Perception Index 2015, which indicates a low risk of corruption taking place.
Our Monitoring & Reporting
To ensure that we meet our requirements and we progress towards our ambition we will carry out the following actions:
Where existing suppliers are unable to demonstrate compliance with our minimum requirements (Bronze) we will support them to meet these requirements as soon as possible, by developing a joint, time bound action plan. If, after a permitted time, (which will depend on the particular circumstances but will be no longer than two years) the required standards have not been met, or there has been insufficient progress demonstrated to that end, then we will stop working with these suppliers.
We are actively working with our suppliers to help them progress through our Bronze, Silver and Gold standards, with the ultimate aim of helping them to achieve FSC certification, thereby enabling us to meet our ambition to secure sustainably-sourced timber for the products we sell.
We maintain an open and transparent dialogue with stakeholders involved in our timber sourcing, including NGOs (non-government organisations) such as WWF who are involved in campaigning for sustainable forest management and timber sourcing.
Our ambition over the coming years is to have complete control of all stages of our supply chain, from the forest through to the showroom, and through our efforts contribute to the widening of the FSC network.
Policy governance arrangements
On an annual basis, we will review this Policy to ensure that it reflects best practice in responsible and sustainable timber sourcing. We will publicly report annually on the progress that we are making against the requirements of this Policy.
