History of the Lamp Table

Tables for all purposes have been around for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese built tables for all purposes, from simply keeping objects up off the floor to providing platforms for writing and artistic activities. Later, The Greeks and Romans began to make tables from wood, marble and metal for eating. As well as large dining and working tables, small tables have been seen throughout history, often used for displaying lamps or other objects.

Lamp Table Styles

Over the years, the humble lamp table has been built in countless different styles and designs, from gate legs with additional drop-leaves to collapsible trestle tables to the traditional four legged variety. Table legs can be braced or free, and can be designed as plain, straight and chunky to intricately turned and carved and everything in between. Lamp tables, though small, are just as diversely designed. We stock lamp tables with slab sides, in box designs and of course plenty of traditional four legged varieties, some with shelves and even drawers built in.

Lamp Table Materials

Wood and specifically hardwood such as oak or mahogany has always been an obvious choice of material for lamp table construction. Not only hardwearing and workable, the variety of wood types available is vast and varied. Even after wooden furniture has been crafted into the desired design, the finishes achievable are endless – from any imaginable colour of paint or stain, to wax, oil, varnish or lacquer. In keeping with tradition, most of the furniture we stock at Oak Furniture Land is crafted from solid oak and we also stock mahogany and tropical mango hardwood ranges.
