Ahhh the coast. There’s something about the sand and sea that makes us feel refreshed and alive so there’s little wonder that with over 5000 miles of coast on our fair island, nearly half of all Brits will head to the coast on a day out. But what if I told you there’s a way to capture that feeling all year round without even having to leave the house?
You may already be aware of the nautical influences in design but creating a look that takes its cues from the sea and sand can be a wonderful way of capturing the essence of the beach no matter what the season. So here are my tips on getting an easy breezy coastal look even if you live miles from the nearest coastline!
Blue and White
One of the biggest trends of the last few years has been indigo blue. We’re seeing it in everything from wall paint to cushions to dinnerware and bedding. Choosing a blue and white colour palette keeps things fresh and bright, reminiscent of the sun reflecting off the sand and the deep blue of the sky.
Check out our stunning Westbury sofa range which comes in a soft ticking blue stripe for a perfect take on the coastal style.

For true coastal style, you’ll want to keep your palette fresh and bright. A crisp white paint colour will provide the perfect backdrop for coastal chic style but you could also consider a soft blue for your walls, like the clear sky on a sunny day.
Feeling creative? Channel a coastal vibe with white wood panelling to create a natural texture to your space or fake it with wood plank wallpaper if you don’t fancy getting your hands dirty!
Wood flooring is a perfect natural base for this look so consider either sanding and sealing original wood floors or painting your floorboards white to reflect a light and airy vibe.
For the perfect textural finish on your floors, choose area rugs made of natural materials like jute, coir or sisal to add warmth and interest.
Natural Wood Furniture

Natural wood furniture is the perfect finish for a coastal vibe. It pairs wonderfully with a pale colour scheme and adds warmth and texture to your room. Pair it with grey, white and natural textures and allow the natural grains to shine through.
You can also mix your natural furniture with painted furniture to create a wonderful New England-inspired look in your home. The Kemble Range combines a soft white with natural wood accents to create the breezy airy look that works especially well with coastal style.

Of course, you’ll also want to combine these larger pieces with a few coastal-inspired pieces. Blue and white stripe fabrics, natural unbleached linen, softly aged cotton and knitted fabrics all work beautifully with this comfortable and welcoming look.

The nautical look at its core is a relaxed and liveable one so be sure to complete the look with fun accessories like artwork depicting the sea or beach scenes, woven rope accessories or natural accents like rustic wood bowls, driftwood, pebbles or seashells to capture the holiday spirit in your home.
