A sofa is a big purchase and chosen to fit in with our lifestyle, our home, and our family. Too often, however, it seems to end up as a piece of furniture that is being extremely well used without a second thought. In the shortest time it might become something that just sits in our living room without us even thinking about it (or how it looks) – unless we need somewhere to sit, of course.
Wouldn’t it be far nicer and more inviting to dress your sofa in a way that turns it something that is inviting and good looking at the same time? It does of course need to fit in with your home and be suitable for sitting on. This is why I thought I’d come up with a few pointers on how to add a some small but well-chosen details to your sofa which will make it look this little more friendly.

If you generally like your home to be understated and calm, then adding accessories – cushions in this case – in no more than two colours is the right thing for you. No colour at all would be a little boring, but adding some muted reds to a grey sofa gives it just enough colour to make a statement without being overpowering. The great thing is, cushions are relatively cheap to buy and the colours can be changed according to season. Maybe some fresh green for spring and some deep reds or purples for winter?

If your home or living room has a theme (think seaside, moroccan, or shabby chic), then dressing the sofa accordingly makes sense. Pick out the colour and fabric of your sofa to base any cushions on it. The style of your interior should be reflected in these accessories. That means that if you’re going for a seaside and travelling theme, pick washed out blues, heavy linens, or natural cottons. The same would go for any other theme. If you’re so inclined, you could even theme your sofa for a party evening with some sequinned cushions, fabrics like velvet and golden tassels for a little bit of festive bling. Or maybe some red and greens for Christmas…?

Layering is key for any cosy sofa. Pile up the cushions and blankets. They don’t need to be pristine and can be sat on and used for comfort. Use different fabrics like wool, cotton, velvet and linen to make a look interesting without having to add lots of colour. A sofa like this will never look like it’s too precious to sit on, but will invite your guests to turn up with a bottle of wine and snuggle up with you for a good chat.

I mentioned loading up your sofa and layering textures earlier and this is something that works for most looks including the very feminine one. Combine powdery pinks with soft greys in sumptuous textures to create this look. It is exactly this combination of soft colours and very touchable fabrics which makes this look so pretty without it becoming too sickly sweet. Just a small word of advice: if you do like to actually sit on your sofa, I’d advise to maybe scale down the amount of cushions just a little…
So, I hope this post is useful to you and it might give you some ideas on what to do with your sofa.
