The launch of our new Detroit range introduces a stylish collection of distinctive dark hardwood designs that tap into the ever popular industrial look.

Drawing on the trend’s key features and incorporating materials that are robust and practical, Detroit’s impactful details include tactile, rich-toned timbers teamed with galvanised metal handles and legs that together provide strong, statement shaping. Carefully built using solid Acacia which is stained and glazed, each piece combines smooth panels alongside more distressed ones where the roughly hewn grain is scored with a saw to give an added depth of texture which we hope fans of modern dark furniture will love.

Detroit in the dining room

Detroit dining

Acacia is incredibly durable, making it ideal in a kitchen diner: the heart of a family home. A beautifully built hardwood table will withstand lots of wear and tear and, unlike a veneer or laminate, it won’t peel or chip; it’s the perfect place to enjoy lively mealtimes packed with conversation and tasty food or somewhere to spread out and crack on with work or crafts.

The sturdy angled metal legs and generous solid timber top on the Detroit dining table are mirrored on the benches. Benches are a favourite. Not only are they more informal and an easy way of entertaining extras if you’re a family with young kids and need to squeeze lots of little ones round the table, a bench is also a great space saver. Available in two sizes, the smaller one will stow under the table when you’re not using it or repurpose the larger version round the home in the hallway, for example, with some baskets for shoes popped underneath it. Alternatively, mix and match some of the Detroit dining chairs with backs that echo the slats on some of the collection’s doors and cupboards.

Detroit in the living room

Detroit living

Detroit’s rich, moody tones fit beautifully in a living room which helps create a cocooning space where you can settle down in comfort. Choose our Detroit console table or extra large sideboard and create a statement focal point while sneaking in some brilliant storage too. Look to bring in a softening mix of tactile upholstery, rugs, linens and textiles. Lift the darker shade of the wood with pops of greenery and foliage which will create a visual contrast with sleek lines and metal detailing.

We love Detroit’s modern play on more traditional furniture pieces. The nesting coffee table is an adaptable design and a great way to dip your toe in the industrial trend.

Detroit in the bedroom

Its masculine aesthetic might not make it an obvious choice for a softer space like the bedroom, but when pieces are paired with gentle pastel backdrops, we see Detroit’s warmer side. The collection’s strong lines, dark wood, sleek metal handles and slim legs all help bring a contemporary edge to schemes that otherwise might seem sweet or twee. This works particularly well in bedrooms where you tend to find more feminine palettes and are after furniture like a bedside table or chest of drawers to ground the scheme.

Classic carpentry skills always inform our attention to detail, even with the more contemporary collections and Detroit is no exception. Dovetail jointed drawers have solid backs and bases and hardwood runners which gives the pieces longevity and make them a pleasure to use everyday. It’s the small considerations like this that make the big difference in terms of the quality of our furniture.
