It’s often the overlooked ‘dumping ground’ in the house but the hallway should never be forgotten about when bringing Christmas sparkle to your home. After decorating the Christmas tree in our lounge, the next part of our home I get so excited to decorate is our hallway.

Our everyday hallway

Having just completed a 1930s house renovation (well, nearly) the hallway was one of the last rooms to finish off. A fairly tight fitting space, I knew I wanted a solid wooden console table to sit in the corner and the Shay console table was exactly what I had in mind. Plenty of storage, a modern country look, partially painted in a soft complementary colour with an exposed wooden surface.

Our festive hallway

Console tables are such a delight to decorate during the festive period, and in fact, through all seasons. During autumn we had large vases of leaves along the top, and now that we’re moving into winter, it’s all about Christmas.

Festive hallway style

The first thing I did to make a feature of the furniture was lean this large mirror above it. It bounces around the light in what is normally quite a dark room in winter months. Next, I wrapped a thick, bushy festive garland along the top of the mirror which instantly gives the space a festive feel, decorating the surface with some of my favourite Christmas decorations and a table centrepiece.

Christmas Hallway Inspiration

Underneath the Shay console table there’s a large open area that is the perfect home for wicker baskets to hide away shoes. Given it’s so close to my living room I took advantage of the extra room by piling up logs ready for the winter. Instantly it gave a more homely, Christmas feel.

Elsewhere in the hall, I introduced an indoor wreath on the door – because why have only one outside that for the most part you can’t see? I tend to use artificial wreaths as they are far lighter and a one-time investment you can style with for many more Christmases to come. If you have a front door like ours with glass on the upper portion, 3M hooks stick easily to the glass to fix a wreath from it.

Festive hallway for Christmas

Similar along the bannister, I used 3M clip hooks with sticky backs to fix this pre-lit garland all along the stairs. What’s brilliant about this – apart from looking super festive – is just how easy it is to stick these on and remove them come January.

Mini hallway Christmas tree

Perhaps my favourite element of the hallway is our real mini Christmas tree. When you look in magazines and on Pinterest for Christmas decor ideas, often you see large Christmas trees making a grand festive entrance to gigantic homes. Obviously in the UK, the large proportion of homeowners like you and I tend to have far narrower, smaller hallways so a much more modest mini Christmas tree like this one is ideal for corners you can’t fit much else.

Top tips for creating a welcoming festive hallway

  1. Garlands! Drape them everywhere you can. Around the door, around mirrors, along bannisters. Bonus points if they’re pre-lit and twinkle.
  2. Burn a festive scented candle. Wafts of gingerbread, pine or cinnamon is such a lovely festive welcome for guests.
  3. Stack logs. Whether inside your hallway or in an outdoor porch, logs bring an instant rustic charm to festive decoration – and they smell so homely too.
