Renting your first home is often the reality but this doesn’t mean it won’t feel like home.

Decorating may have some restrictions but there is still loads that can be done to make it feel warm and inviting. Most landlords would be delighted for you to freshen up the walls with some coats of paint. Get creative with a few small tester pots and design your own geometric wall.

Wall stickers are inexpensive and can transform a wall too, and better still, they’re removable should you need to return the walls to its original state. If you’re not allowed wallpaper, then consider large canvases or framed prints to add your personality.

Fabric remnants stapled around large wall canvases make inexpensive wall art to brighten up a space. Personalise your space by displaying lots of your favourite treasures collected over the years to make the space feel yours. I especially love to lean framed prints and other quirky ornaments on picture ledges to make an impact.

If you’ve been given a few “hand-me-down” pieces of furniture that aren’t exactly to your taste, why not give them a mini makeover. Painting a piece of furniture can give it a new lease of life without having to splash out. Preparation is key though and make sure you sand down all the surfaces first and paint over with a primer first. Spray paint can work wonders of smaller pieces like lamp bases and vases. If you can, invest in a quality piece that will last a lifetime, like the stylish Kemble Rustic Oak painted double bed.

A classic shape won’t date and will ensure a comfy night for years to come.

One of my top tips for making a room feel cosy is accessories. You can’t have too many in my book. Cosy up the room with plenty of soft furnishings in a comforting palette and also group together a set of candles. Candlelight can transform the ambience as can a few table lamps dotted around the corners of the room.

Rugs are another important factor.

Not only can they create a cosy-underfoot feel and add a splash of colour, they can also help define different zones, especially effective in an open-plan space.

Also thinking outside the box helps the purse strings too. Old suitcases stacked up make a quirky bedside table, even piles of magazines can be a perfect spot for a bedside light. Old fruit crates, painted or left in their natural rustic state, can make attractive storage boxes. Green leafy indoor plants and fresh flowers add oodles of character to a room. Pick them up cheaply from flower markets or a local garden centre and fill your home with your favourite aromas to make it feel like home.

Interior stylist Emma Fishman began her career at Country Homes & Interiors, where her passion for all things home décor began.
