Arr, me hearties! Love it or loathe it, the maritime theme is a timeless decorating trend that’s here to stay. Conjure up a relaxing nautical motif for your little one by taking inspiration from the sun, sea and sand. This playful theme is easy to achieve with a simple colour palette and a few decorating touches.
Pick your colour palette
For our maritime theme, use the traditional colours of red, white and blue as your starting point and then start to mix and match other hues to tailor this theme to your own tastes. Navy is a nautical native and can be a sophisticated shade for creating a cosy and comforting nursery room but if you don’t fancy using dark shades, you can employ lighter pastel blues to make the room feel bright and airy. If you’re a fan of bright colours, flashes of coral pink or yellow offer a striking complement to the naval colour palette.
Money For Old Rope
One trick for nailing the nautical trend is adding rustic rope touches in key pieces throughout the room. Make a stack of brilliant rope shelves following this great tutorial, or pop down to your local chandlery to pick up a rustic boat fender to use as a door stop. Rope detail can also be added to the outside of a mirror for a nautical touch on a beachcomber budget – this video tutorial shows you how to complete the look.
Furniture and Accessories
Of course, the trick to tying the whole theme together lies in the accessories. Here we’ve compiled a few of our favourites for achieving that nautical look.
First, start with the nursery furniture. Choose a neutral painted range like our Country Cottage or the Kemble Rustic to accessorise with. Their hushed tones offer a great foundation to build your nautical theme upon. But if your sailor becomes a land lover and you want to sail away from red and blue, the painted ranges are a more versatile choice and will blend in with your new chosen colour scheme. Better yet, the cot will transform into a bed for your growing explorer.
This gorgeous personalised boat print is a lovely keepsake idea for remembering just how tiny baby was in the first few weeks, using those teeny tiny footprints and adding their name for a personal touch. Adorable! Nautical themed bunting continues the vintage-style shabby chic theme, and the mixture of blues compliments the pale tones of our furniture perfectly. Add a mobile fit for a sailor and let your little captain nod off to the sound of the sea.
