Bring the Outdoors In This Spring

With sunnier weather finally here and temperatures on the way up, it’s a perfect time of year to start thinking about how we can bring those elements found in nature into our own homes.

As much as I love to spend time outdoors, due to work and family commitments, I can’t always fit long leisurely nature walks or a day in the park in my every day plans.  So what I try to do at this time of year is to bring a little bit of what being outside feels like into my own home.

House plants are big trend for 2014 and hopefully, they are here to stay for a while. I love the look and there are so many creative ways to incorporate plants into your home. Not only do they look great – they clean the air while looking rather fabulous, adding natural organic shapes and texture to a space.

Flowers: Nothing beats the colour and fragrance of fresh blooms dotted around the home. They don’t have to be expensive either. Take a supermarket bouquet and split it up to fill various vessels around the home. Get creative – you don’t have to just use a vase. A small votive candle holder, jam jars, cleaned out bottles – they all make great casual receptacles for flowers!

Wood and Wicker:  The beauty of natural wood simply never goes out of style. Whether you like it simply oiled for the natural grains to show through, stained to a deep rich colour or painted, it grounds a space and gives a warmth to any room in which it appears.  Adding wicker chairs softens the look and creates a welcoming atmosphere to any space. Our High Back Grass Chair combined with our Mango dining table could easily give you this look!

Hides and Leather: Another trend to hit our shores recently are the emergence of hide rugs and hide in other places, like chairs and benches. Whatever your leanings in terms of liking them or not or prefer the faux to the real, they are appearing more and more in our decor in creative spaces.

These are just some of the ways you can bring the look of the great outdoors to your home! What other ways do you bring the outdoors in? I’d love to hear from you!
