In the midst of all the grey dull weather and cold temperatures, we tend to want to create our own little nest right at home. Thankfully, we can make our surroundings warm, cosy and comfortable by taking cues from a season filled with winter walks, cuddles in front of the fire and a cup of hot cocoa to make the most of the season.

Colours

The cabin look takes inspiration from a winter forest so stick with natural wood finishes, soft greys, white and taupe and plenty of greenery for your colour scheme. You might also want to contrast with a touch of berry red for a festive finish. Don’t forget about your metal finishes as well. Silver can bring a touch of icy coolness to the space but gold warms it up beautifully. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.
Textures

Layering your textiles is probably one of easiest ways to create cosy cabin style. Think faux fur and knitted blankets, tartan patterns and warm wool to create as much physical and visual warmth as possible.
Drape your throws over deep-seated arm chairs and add some additional cushions to your sofa or bed. Consider a wicker basket with a few more throws tucked inside for good measure as an invitation to cuddle up by the fireplace.
Lighting

Of course, in the darkest months, additional lighting is so important but don’t be so quick to switch on the large ceiling light at the centre of your room. Fairy lights or LED wire string lights can be used all season long and are perfect for wrapping around a mirror or a bedhead to create a stylish and subtle look.
Don’t forget the candles as well as a few table lamps to create soft pools of light in your room too. As for the large light in the centre of the room? Look out for those made of natural materials like wood or rattan to tie in the scheme but make sure you place the light on a dimmer to create ambience.
Finishing touches

Faux stag heads will add a whimsical cabin look as will textiles with illustrations of wildlife or winter fauna. Consider accessories that call on nature for its cue and finish off with branches of winter berries or eucalyptus to add a subtle fragrance. Look out for scented candles in winter scents of pine, cinnamon and orange or spices.
