5 Reasons You Should Probably Decorate with Black and White

As much as I am an admitted colour lover, there’s something incredibly appealing to me about a black and white interior. While I don’t think I would be able to resist adding a touch of colour and I am not a fan of rooms without texture or interest alongside a strict palette, I admire the restraint of those who use black and white to create a sophistication in a room that can’t be matched.

I decided to share today 5 totally different styles of rooms where black and white have been used to create spaces that are restrained in their use of colour but also have an inviting warmth to them. And I think this is the key to using black and white successfully – it’s the details that really create those undercurrents and variety instead of something that could potentially look very flat or boring. Using those all important shades that lie between, incorporating natural materials, playing with pattern and texture and adding warm metals and contrasting finishes make for a beautiful space that looks incredibly chic too.

So why should you probably be decorating with black and white in your interiors? Here are just 5 reasons…

To add drama to a small space

The quiet sophistication of pale grey and white tiles contrasts to a high energy tiled floor. Utilising the floor to add pattern is a great way to create interest in any space but it’s especially inviting in the smallest room in the home.

To add high-energy to a normally quiet space

This graphic wall knocks out every rule in the book for bedrooms and I think that’s why I love it. Could I sleep in here? Maybe. But there’s no doubt that the bold strokes create an exciting backdrop for a brass four-poster bed and bold artwork. Who says bedrooms have to be peaceful havens of relaxation? If your vibe is to go bold or go home, then sometimes rules are meant to be broken and using black and white is an exciting way to have fun and do your own thing.

To create the perfect backdrop for rustic furnishings and accessories

Black and white will always be a fantastic backdrop when you really want the objects in a room to shine. Here, an eclectic mix of furniture and accessories stand out from the black floors and kitchen units and white walls surrounding them. It’s clear here that using black and white is not just for those who wish for a minimal look. It can be incorporated in nearly any style as long as it’d done with confidence.

To add old school Hollywood charm

Bold black and white stripes were a staple in Hollywood Regency style and often the signature of top stylist of the time, Dorothy Draper. Why not incorporate some old Hollywood style into your décor for an OTT glam look? Combined here with luxe materials like gold and crystal, it’s the perfect spot for sipping a martini in style.

To add contrast against shades of grey

We all know that grey is one of the most popular neutral colours around in interiors today. It’s quietly sophisticated and marries with nearly every other colour of the rainbow. But if you wish for something with more drama, then why not contrast those 50 shades with the luxe look of black and white? Here, texture is key from the fabric of the sofa, the woven rug and the black faux fur throw on the chair to the glint of brass and gloss of the mid-century style lighting. Finishing off the look, the artwork grabs attention in simple contemporary black frames.

So those are just 5 reasons why you should probably be decorating with black and white. Do you have any to add? I’d love to hear from you if you love this look!
