The UK's largest retailer of solid hardwood furniture

Wood and Hardwood Furniture

Today, wood and hardwood are still the most sought after materials for modern furniture making. Solid oak wood is a versatile hardwood, and can be made into a wide range of designs, either modern furniture or traditional designs to look like antique furniture. Solid oak wood and hardwood in general have a naturally beautiful grain, and if they are properly cared for will last a lifetime. The unique grain of the wood and hardwood that have been 'quarter cut' give the wood a flower like appearance. In the past, solid oak has been one of the mainstays of wood and hardwood furniture making in Britain and her empire. Wood and hardwood was regularly used in ship building, and it was said that Britain's Empire had been founded on solid oak. It has found its way into some of the country's most prestigious buildings, including the wood and hardwood furniture in the House of Commons. Wood and hardwood flooring is as popular today as it ever has been, and is much more durable than the hardwood veneer flooring you can now get.

Types of Wood and Hardwood Furniture

There are a number of different wood and hardwood types. Oak wood has many variants, including Pippy oak wood, which has an appearance which looks as though cat's paws have been blended into the surface. Burr oak wood is similar to Pippy oak wood, but is much more dense. The appearance of Brown oak wood, which presents itself as a brown stain growing through the tree, is caused by the Beef Steak fungus, which attacks the tree whilst it is still growing. Tiger oak wood is similar to the brown oak wood, but has a much more striped appearance. Finally, there is Bog Oak wood. Bog Oak wood is extremely rare, and gets its appearance following several centuries of being preserved in a peat bog.

Properties of Wood and Hardwood Furniture

Oak wood and hardwood furniture is a very durable material, able to withstand hard wear from regular family or office use. Generally, it is much sturdier and hard wearing than other wood and hardwood furniture, for example mahogany wood. It does not damage as easily as other wood and hardwood furniture. The natural beauty of the grain can be enhanced by natural Furniture Wax, but the wood can also be stained to slightly alter its appearance to suit various tastes. It is very popular as wood and hardwood furniture, both in Britain and America, but has a wide appeal whatever the type of home furnishings is required.

Some wood and hardwood furniture is made of solid oak, whilst other furniture can be made from less expensive materials, but with a thin coat of oak veneer. Oak veneer can be glued to pine furniture for example. This is of far inferior quality and should be avoided. Look for well constructed 100% solid oak furniture. The oak wood pieces should be fitted together with no gaps. This can be seen to good effect when buying furniture made by skilled craftsmen. The natural solid oak wood itself has a coarse grain, but well manufactured pieces should be smooth. When looking for solid oak furniture, check the finish of the wood surface. Wood and hardwood furniture which has been coated or stained should have a uniform appearance, and should not be patchy. The warmth of the wood and hardwood furniture should be seen through the finish to show the appearance of the grain to good effect.
